Excuses, Excuses, Excuses....

Hey There, Hi There, Ho There - long time no blog. This working thing really sucks up way too much living time. I've been wanting to write here but just can't seem to find the time to sit at the computer and do it. Something had to give and, unfortunately, as much as I love blogging I just couldn't get to it. If I had a choice between working out and writing about working out I've been choosing to sweat. Priorities, right?

I've been keeping up with what's going on with you by reading blogs on the train during my commute to and from work but service is spotty and it's almost impossible to comment from my phone so I'm sorry if I haven't been a good blogging buddy. I continue to cheer you on even though you don't see it in a comment. I hope you understand and I hope to get better with my time management and get around to commenting once in a while. I miss you guys.

I keep seeing this commercial for a local health insurance company where a couple asks each other every day whether they went to the gym. Their excuses range from "I forgot my ponytail holder," "I missed the cat," "I don't think I needed it today," "my Mother called," and the most common excuse I used other than "no time," "toooooooo tired." It got me thinking about the million and one excuses we use for not living the life we want to live. There is always an excuse for not being able to get to the gym, right? We can always find a reason why we can't go for a walk, why we can't eat healthy, why we can't resist the tempting fattening foods in our face every day, why we can't start our diet today, why we'll put it off until tomorrow or next Monday, after the holidays, after the birthday party, etc. etc. We need to stop giving ourselves excuses and start finding ways to work around them.

It really comes down to making a commitment to take care of ourselves and making it a priority in our lives. We have to eat to live so we need to focus on more fruits, vegetables and lean proteins and less fried, sugary fatty processed crap food. Sure, we can indulge now and then but not every day at every meal. A treat should be a treat, not an everyday thing. I know what that store bought cake tastes like and I don't love it so why should I waste the calories on it?

We can't survive without water but we can certainly live without soda. I'm still amazed that I haven't had a Diet Coke in almost 4 years! I used to have Diet Coke running through my veins and I'm not even tempted to drink it anymore. I don't crave it and could care less if other people around me are drinking it, I don't even want it now and there was a time I thought I couldn't live without it.

We can change our habits. It is possible. We have the technology and the ability we just have to believe we can and make it happen. It won't happen overnight but it will happen if we keep believing it is possible and keep working towards our goals. We will never be perfect but we can keep getting better and better with each little baby step in the right direction.

My biggest excuse these days is I have "no time" to do anything but I'm squeezing in exercise where I can and trying to rein in the mindless/stress/social eating. Between working long hours, the holidays, and vacation, I've regained some weight but I'm not freaking out about it (yet). I don't have the time to spend hours at the gym everyday anymore so it's no surprise I'm up on the scale but I'm fighting to keep it under control and deal with my circumstances. I finally worked up the courage to ask the boss about taking an extended lunch twice a week so I could go to my kickboxing class and he said YES ;).

So, what's your biggest excuse? and what can you do to work around it?

Quick Fixes, Magic Pills and Excuses ....

It's too hot to think around here so if you've been sitting there at the computer looking, JUST LOOKING, for some sort of motivation, head over to Anonymous Fat Girl's site and read this post. That's right Bobbie, there are no quick fixes, magic pills or excuses.

I had been feeling a bit discouraged lately by my snail's pace weight loss, especially when people like Jewlia Goulia hit 100 pounds lost in under seven months (Congrats Jewlia ;), and then a little light went off when I read AFG's post and realize I'm still a work in progress, but I am doing this. I have lost 34.8 lbs. off of my body and sustained a healthy lifestyle for over eight months. No quick fixes and no excuses. Even Jewlia agrees that there are no magic pills, no fad diets, no reality shows, just simply eating well and moving!

It's not a competition to see how fast we can lose weight but how we learn to live and love a healthy lifestyle. You know, live and learn.

Start Now, Not Monday

Cammy of Tippy Toe Diet fame wrote an excellent post about not waiting until Monday to start a healthy eating/exercise/healthy life program. You should check out her insightful post here if you haven't seen it yet. I wanted share my comments here because I couldn't agree with her more.

I've waited long enough. I'm done waiting. There's always going to be an excuse to start next Monday after the holiday food fest trifecta. I've used every single excuse there is over the past 20+ years and I'm done making excuses.

Stop waiting for next Monday because you will only have Valentine's Day chocolate to eat, St. Patrick's Day alcohol to drink, tax time stress to endure, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day BBQ's to attend, Halloween candy to devour, and then we're right back to the mother of all excuses, the food feasts of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years again.

If we wait until Monday to start a program we'll only find ourselves looking back on 2010 and bemoaning how we didn't lose weight and wonder why we get fatter and fatter each year. If those holiday excuses aren't enough you have office functions, business lunches, cocktail parties, birthday parties and anniversary parties. It looks like there may be a small window of opportunity to start a diet in June if you don't have a wedding to go to.

Don't wait until Monday. Don't wait until June. Every day, every meal, every morsel is a new time to start. No more excuses. NOW is the best time to start. RIGHT NOW!

Excuses Excuses ....

I have a million of them: I'm stressed, I'm tired, I had to work late, my friends are in town, I was at a party/wedding/birthday, I have a headache, my knee hurts, it's too cold, it's raining, it's snowing, it's too hot, it's dark, I'm congested, my asthma has been acting up, my allergies are bothering me, blah, blah, blah, blah, BLAH.

I have been using all these excuses and so many more. I think the only excuse I haven't used is "my dog ate it" but only because I don't have a damn dog, otherwise I'm sure I'd find a way to blame it for my inability to stay focused, eat right, stop binging on junk and work out harder and longer.

I spend more time reading about other people's weight loss successes instead of focusing on my own efforts. I feel like a fraud just having a blog that purports to chronicle my weight loss effort. I started reading blogs like Pasta Queen's (and so many other weight loss champions) when she had over 100 pounds more than me to lose and now she is running half marathons, has had her weight loss memoir published and living the life of a happy healthy person. I don't want to be back here choking on the dust as everyone else leaves me behind in their weight loss wake.

Everyday I wake up with a renewed determination. I tell myself that this is it, this is the beginning of the new me, this is the last time I will see "THAT" number on the scale. Will today be the day? Will that switch be flipped?

Yes! I have to do this NOW! I can't wait another day of floundering around.

NO MORE EXCUSES! JUST DO IT ALREADY!
